Information about the focus
Studying the Focus on Business Process Management - What Does That Mean?
Business Process Management (BPM) is a systematic approach to analyzing, designing, implementing, controlling, and improving business processes. This focus covers the concepts, methods, and tools of the BPM lifecycle, applying them in practice. The goal is to gain a holistic understanding of the collection, analysis, improvement, implementation, and monitoring of business processes and to assess the possibilities and limits of supporting technologies. Basic knowledge of process modeling with BPMN, as taught in the precursor module "Enterprise Modeling," is assumed for this focus.
In the fourth semester, we concentrate on business process development with the goal of developing optimal target processes. The course offers an introduction to business process management and the BPM lifecycle, evaluates the BPM maturity level, and addresses organizational aspects. We learn about planning the process architecture, identifying core processes, advanced modeling concepts, methods for process collection, as well as qualitative and quantitative process analysis and improvement. This lays the foundation for efficient and optimized business operations.
In the fifth semester, the focus is on business process implementation. The focus here is on the transformation from the target process to the practically implemented process. Process-oriented information systems are examined in depth to enable effective process implementation with executable models. It is shown how decision rules and flexible processes can be implemented in practice to enhance the efficiency and adaptability of business processes. Moreover, the organizational design of the transformation process, including change management, is discussed to ensure a smooth transition. A practical project on process automation concludes the semester by applying the learned methods and techniques to optimize the planning, control, and monitoring of business processes.
In the sixth semester, the focus is on selected aspects of Business Process Management to explore deeper strategies and methods for process optimization.
In the seventh semester, we finally delve into business process controlling and process mining under the motto "From implemented process to ongoing process improvement." Here, we focus on performance metrics for process monitoring and introduce process mining. Students learn to perform process analyses with event data, focusing on process discovery algorithms and deviation analyses, as well as conformance checking. By applying process mining tools to selected case studies, the theoretical knowledge is practically applied to identify and implement performance improvements and efficiency gains in business processes.
Overview of the focus modules:
